Braised Red Cabbage

Easy and simple vegan braised red cabbage, this delicious festive side dish is a must have to your Christmas menu {vegan, gluten free, dairy free, clean eating}

Have you finalized your Christmas menu? I haven’t chosen our main dish yet (I’m still hesitating between fish and pork), but I’m pretty sure braised red cabbage won’t be missing from our festive table. This simple veggie-side can be prepared ahead, so you can have a stress free cooking for the holidays.

This colorful and simple food is one of our favorite side dishes in cold season. Red cabbage is cheap and always available in shops, braising it is easy and simple, freezes well and goes perfectly with any meat, especially with roasts. Do you need more reasons to make this great vegan, dairy and gluten free side dish? :)

Preparing this veggie dish is easy and requires just a short list of ingredients. Braising is a simple technique: first sauté the sliced onion and cabbage in olive oil on high heat, then simmer it covered on low heat. You will get sweet and sour, sticky cabbage, what goes great with pork and potatoes. It’s a perfect traditional Christmas side dish, isn’t it? If you want to upgrade this dish, add some chopped bacon, apple or cranberries.

Skip the stress and make this delicious vegan festive side dish in advance! Refrigerate the braised cabbage or even freeze it, then serve warm or cold when you desire. Enjoy your Christmas dinner! Happy holidays!

Easy and simple braised red cabbage [vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free]
Ingredients
  • 4 cups | ⅓ red cabbage
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 medium red onion
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice (or vinegar)
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin
  • salt
  • pepper
Let's get started!
  1. Using a sharp knife slice thinly the cabbage and set aside.
  2. In a large pot heat two tablespoons olive oil, add the sliced onion and sauté for 1-2 minutes, then add the cabbage. Toss to coat with the oil. Sauté on high heat for 5-8 minutes, stir continuously.
  3. Sprinkle sugar over the cabbage, stir it well, then add the lemon juice. Season the cabbage with salt, pepper and cumin.
  4. Cover the pot and simmer on low heat stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender.
  5. Serve it warm or cold.
